POSITION SUMMARY

  • This position is a responsible recreation administrative position dealing with planning, organizing and directing various recreational programs. An employee in this position is responsible for developing and administering a comprehensive county recreation program for all citizens of the county. This person must be a self-motivated conscientious and organized; must have supervisory experience plus budgetary knowledge. This person must also have experience in public relations and program skills. An employee in this class is also responsible for other work assignments given to them by the Recreation Manager.
  • This person assures that program objectives are accomplished under this department throughout the county. This person must exercise independent judgment and ingenuity in accomplishing program objectives and interpreting the needs and desires of the public.
  • Work is typically performed sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending or crouching and requires frequent lifting of light objects and occasional lifting of heavy objects. Employee must be able to climb ladders, distinguish among shades of color, and exhibit manual dexterity.
  • Work is performed in an office or stock room and outside where the employee is exposed to cold, heat and inclement weather. Employee is exposed to dirt, dust, and noise.
  • Contacts are typically with co-workers in recreation, other county departments, community organizations and civic clubs, part-time and volunteer helpers and the general public.
  • The position has direct supervision over certain athletic staff as assigned, gymnasium coordinators, volunteer program assistants, and the general public.
  • B.S. Degree in Recreation Administration or a related field and at least five years of recreational experience required. Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the Recreational field.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to five years of experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license.

NATURE AND SCOPE

  • Successful performance in this position helps to assure the delivery of safe and enjoyable recreation services within the county. The work of this position also impacts the overall effectiveness of others within the Recreation Department.
  • Guidelines consist of the Policies and Procedures of the county and of the Recreation Department as well as instructions from the Recreation Manager. Most guidelines are clear and specific, but the employee does have to use interpretation in relation to special events.
  • The work of this position is to organize and supervise within the county. The work includes many unrelated tasks and the work is made complex by the number and variety of things to be done; by the long and irregular hours; and by the demand for services that are increasing more rapidly than the resources.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information that supports provision of recreation services, coordinate programs and activities with other recreation departments, local schools, and churches and provide information to the public about available services

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Plans, organizes, promotes, schedules, supervises, coordinates and participates in a diversified program of activities, special events, games, and programs related to all ages.
  • Advises the staff and volunteer program assistants on different program aspects. Assist in the selection and training of necessary volunteers and instructors to meet the program demands; promotes the understanding by and cooperation with citizens and interested groups in designing and developing programs to meet the needs and interest of the county.
  • Analyzes and adapts program techniques and activities to meet the needs and request of the general public.
  • Advises the Athletic Programs Manager on budget, purchasing, programs, reports, public relations and other matters as it pertains to athletic programs and events.
  • Speaks to volunteer organizations and civic groups concerning department programs upon request. Attends school, workshops and related meetings and seminars as required.
  • Maintains an inventory of program equipment and supplies within his /her program and makes request for additional needs.
  • Maintains a complete record system of activities conducted, participation, ideas or suggestions for improvement for future programs, and any accident reports.
  • Sorts, issues, and collects equipment for each sport activity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the Principles of Recreation and Recreation Programming.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and Safety Regulations.
  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Skill in motivating and directing individuals.
  • Skill in the operation of computer, copier, heat transfer machine, van, public address system and other related equipment.


DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

B.S. Degree in Recreation Administration or a related field and at least five years of recreational experience required. Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the Recreational field.

Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to five years of experience or service.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license. A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
